The chair of the Oregon Health & Science University's Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine was forced to give up his position last week.

Jeffrey Kirsch, who will remain a professor, started with OHSU in 2002. Sharon Anderson, the executive vice president of OHSU and dean of the School of Medicine, said in a statement to staff that she was grateful for Kirsch's leadership.

However, she said that she and John Hunter, executive vice president and chief executive officer of OHSU Health System, had asked Kirsch to step down from his position immediately.

Hunter will act as the head of the Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine until an interim chair can be named.

An OHSU spokeswoman declined to say why Kirsch was removed from the position, saying that personnel records are confidential.

Kirsch has not been disciplined by the Oregon Medical Board nor is involved in any recent lawsuits.
