An electric scooter rider was hit by a car Friday in Northeast Portland.

The male rider was riding south in the bike lane on Northeast 122nd Avenue and was hit by a car turning right onto roadway from the Interstate 84 exit, Portland police said.

The scooter rider wasn't wearing a helmet at the time and wasn't seriously injured in the crash, police said. The female driver wasn't hurt. A police spokesman said he wasn't aware of any citations issued in the case.

E-scooters are in the midst of a four-month trial period in Portland that began at the end of July. Riders are supposed to wear helmets while on the scooters, ride in the bike or vehicle lanes and only be on the sidewalk with them if they're being walked or parked, according to the Portland Bureau of Transportation.

There have been nearly 50,000 e-scooter trips reported in the last two weeks, said Dylan Rivera, a transportation bureau spokesman. He said there have been a few cases of people being hurt while using e-scooters in Portland, but didn't have an estimate of how many or examples of how they've been injured.

Any reports made by riders to the transportation bureau and the e-scooter companies are compiled for use in the bureau's evaluation of the pilot program, Rivera said.
