Clackamas County elections officials were woefully unprepared to handle a known ballot counting challenge and likely won’t finish counting votes until early next week at best, county commissioners learned Wednesday.

That could leave key races, including Congressman Kurt Schrader’s difficult reelection bid for the 5th District, hanging. Two county commission seats, the presidency of regional government Metro, several seats in the Legislature and other outcomes hinge on near-final Clackamas results.
