URGENT: STOP THE DEATH TAX INCREASE

Oregon is cited as the “worst place to die” because of our costly, punishing death tax.

Oregon’s death tax has the nation’s lowest exemption rate, which means you pay the most in America when your loved ones die and they pass along their estate gifts to you.

The tax is so expensive that grieving sons and daughters are often forced to sell the family home or family restaurant in order to pay the massive tax on it. It is a crying shame that Oregon taxes people for dying.

Ÿ This petition eliminates Oregon's death tax (estate tax, inheritance tax) while also prohibiting any local estate tax or inheritance tax.

Ÿ The Oregon estate tax applies to all of the assets of the person who dies. This includes homes, land, retirement funds including pensions and PERS, business property, life insurance, and investment accounts.

Ÿ The Oregon estate tax drives people out of the state when they retire. We lose their income tax payments, but also their capital investment and community contributions. They move to states such as Idaho, Nevada, Arizona – or even California! – which do not have estate taxes. This can even be accomplished by residing 6 months and one day in one of these states.

Ÿ Oregon’s estate tax revenue makes up less than 1% of Oregon’s budget.

Ÿ The deadline to return petitions is late June, but we need people to return them immediately so we have enough time to process them and fix errors.

Ÿ State Representative Kevin Mannix is one of the chief architects of this death tax repeal.
